Piazza IV Novembre, Perugia Perugia is the bustling capital of Umbria, great for shopping, people watching and a wealth of places to eat and drink. But, as with all Italian cities, is not without its share of historic architecture, art galleries and museums. The city also hosts several festivals from the world-famous Umbria Jazz Festival in July, which has seen the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, to the Eurochocolate Festival in October, which is exactly what it sounds like - a must for any chocoholic where you can taste Perugina chocolate which is made right in the city.
Trasimeno Lake The fourth largest lake in Itay, Trasimeno Lake is relatively shallow (7m/23ft maximum), this along with its cleanliness makes it ideal for swimming. It's also possible to take part in different watersports. There are lots of opportunities for walking in the vicinity.
Basilica di San Francesco, AssisiThe birthplace of the founder of the Franciscan Order of monks, St Francis, Assisi is set in the Umbrian hills which makes it a fantastic place to see views across the region. The biggest attraction is the stunning Basilica di San Francesco (see image), which consists of two churches built one on top of the other and houses St Francis' remains. The town is full of delightful narrow streets with beautiful examples of medieval architecture, much of which was built with stone, quarried on Mount Subasio which gives the town a magical quality.
Palazzo dei Consoli, Gubbio Gubbio is located on the first slope of Mount Ingino and is the most medieval of all Umbria's towns. With mountains covered in forest as a backdrop and an unspoilt plain in the front, Gubbio's location is stunning. Gubbio is home of one of the oldest medieval festivals in the world, the Festa dei Ceri which takes place in May each year. The Palazzo dei Consoli (see image) is a dominant structure in the town which is packed with medieval architecture.
